Jump Start Your Closet Makeover by Emptying, Cleaning and Repairing Your Space!

You can jump start your closet makeover by emptying, cleaning, and repairing your space. You'll need to plan ahead, however, before you undertake these tasks.

First, determine where you can temporarily store the contents of your closet while the other organizing tasks, namely cleaning, sourcing, assembling and installing, are being completed. Depending on whether you need to repair and paint and how long it might take to find and install organizers, you'll likey need 3-5 days to complete the job.

When emptying the closet, try to keep categories of clothing, footware and accessories together in the same holding spaces. Store your belongings as close to the room as possible to minimize the work and time involved. Here are some ideas on temporary storage spaces:

  • The underbed space makes sense for shoes.
  • Dresses, shirts, and blouses can be hung in the spare bedroom closet or another family member's closet.
  • Folded clothes can be packed neatly in boxes or on a shelf for easy access.

Once your closet has been completely emptied, clean the space thoroughly. If repairs are needed, now is the time to do them. Fill in any holes with caulking to protect your belongings from dust and pests. Finally, paint the space with a tough, durable coating.

Next take some measurements. These will be needed later when you are choosing organizing products. Measure and note the height, depth, and width of the space. So far, so good. You should also make general notes at this stage regarding the wall, curtain and bedspread colors, as well as the type of flooring and furniture. A few digital photos might also come in handy later when you are shopping for organizers to ensure they fit with the decor.
