Closet Organization Tips: Assembling and Installing Your Organizing System

Closet Organization Tips

It is relatively easy to assemble and install a closet organzing system. You just need to be able to handle a drill and maneuver component parts into place.

Before you begin, get a helper and make sure that you have everything that you'll need. Essential tools include a power drill, measuring tape, hammer, level, and a pencil with an eraser. You'll also need to light the space with a lamp or flashlight.

To start, determine what type of wall you have so that you can choose appropriate fasteners. The three most common types are sheetrock (drywall), masonry and plaster. Drill a small hole in a discreet place on your wall. If resistance is minimal and you hit empty space after approximately 3/4 of an inch, you likely have drywall. If you encounter considerable resistance, however, it's likely masonry or plaster. Masonry would produce red drill dust and plaster creates white drill dust. If your walls are made from either of these materials, use lead anchors to secure your closet organizing system. For drywall, use E-Z Anchors or toggle bolts.

Now you are ready to begin the actual installation. Although every system has slight variations, most hang from a single horizontal anchor rail that is attached to the wall with up to six screws. Before you attach the rail, consider where the uprights and the components will be placed, leaving breathing room at either end, and mark the top and bottom. This will help you to position the rail perfectly. Once the anchor rail is in place, attach the uprights and begin adding the components from the top down.

If you need assistance installing your system, ask your local retailer if they offer installation services. If they do not, ask a friend to help or hire a handyman from the yellow pages. No special skills are required.
