Closet Organizing Idea #1:
Empty, Clean, and Repair
Your Storage Space

Closet Organizing Idea(s)

To organize your closet effectively, you'll need to emtpy it in order to assess your space and your needs. Here's what to consider before you start:
  • Have a supply of containers, boxes, and bags to hold and protect your belongings.
  • Determine whether you'll need help and, if so, make sure that it's available on the days that you plan to complete the job.
It can take 3-5 days or longer to organize your closet depending on your needs and how much time you have to spend each day. Ensure that you schedule sufficient time for all the required tasks. These generally include some or all of the following: cleaning, repairs, painting, sourcing organization systems, assembly and installation, if required, as well as the arranging and packing of clothing.

When emptying your closet, try to keep each category of clothing, footware and accessories together in the same holding spaces. This will not only help you to find things when you need them but will also assist you in assessing your storage needs. Here are some ideas for temporary storage spaces:
  • Harness the underbed space for shoes and out of season clothes.
  • Use a corner of the bedroom to store the things that you need day to day so that they are accessible but not in the way.
  • Store hanging clothes in the spare bedroom closet or another family member's closet.
  • You can also purchase an inexpensive freestanding garment rack to temporarily hold items stored on hangers.
  • Place boxes containing clothes not in active use in the basement or even the garage.

Closet Organizing Idea(s)

Once your closet has been completely emptied, clean the space thoroughly. If repairs are needed, now is the time to do them. Fill in any holes with caulking to protect your belongings from dust and pests and sand the walls. Finally, paint the space with a tough, durable coating.

Next, take some measurements. These will be needed later when you are choosing organizing products. Measure and note the height, depth, and width of the space.

You should also make general notes at this stage regarding the wall, curtain and bedspread colors, as well as the type of flooring and furniture. A few digital photos might also come in handy later when you are shopping for organizers to ensure they fit with the decor.
