Closet Organizing Ideas for Maximizing Your Space!

The following closet organizing ideas will help you to arrange all of your belongings in a way that maximizes your closet space. In previous steps, you sorted your in season clothing and you installed organizers. You're now ready to repack your clothing, footware, and accessories into your closet.

Start at the top. Separate the items that you use everyday from those that you use only occassionally. Occassional items can be stacked one on top of the other or one inside the other, as appropriate, to save space. Make everyday items easy and convenient to access.

Next, move on to items that will be hung up. If possible, avoid using padded hangers as they occupy a lot of valuable space. Instead, use slim hangers which will enable you to maximize the volume of clothing that you can hang in your closet. Multi-tiered hangers can also help you to store more in your closet. They're most effective for storing items that are only used occassionally or are out of season.

If you have an option between hanging an item or folding it, always fold. You can store far more by folding and stacking than you can by hanging. Casual pants, sweat shirts, cotton tops, and sweaters can all be stored this way. Try to stack by category and don't be afraid to stack the items high particularly if they are worn only once in a while. Keep your favourites in smaller, more manageable stacks.

Two often overlooked closet organizing ideas are to utilize the spaces behind the closet door and on the side walls nearest to the outside edge of the closet. You can hang hooks behind the door for hats and scarves. You could also hang a shoe organizer. The wall space can be used for a tie and belt organizer. You could even fasten small containers one above the other along the entire height of the wall to hold jewellry and/or other accessories.

Once you've finished, you'll have a fully organized closet. But what happens if you still have belongings that don't fit into your closet? In the next step, we'll give you closet organizing ideas for what to do with overflow.
