Decluttering Your Closet

Getting rid of closet clutter is easy once you've made decisions about what to toss, donate and sell. In the previous step, you determined which articles of clothing, footware and accessories you no longer want or need. You should now have three piles, labelled "toss", "donate" and "sell", ready to be actioned.

The easiest category to take care of is the items you want to discard. Place them next to the trash if you are using your regular garbage pickup service. If you have a much larger pile, you may need to hire someone to take your unwanted items directly to the dump. "Rent a Son" or a comparable company can help. Try searching the internet using the keywords "odd jobs" and "your City".

Decluttering Your Closet

The next category, donations, is also relatively easy to action. Search the internet using keywords like "where to donate clothes" and "your City". This will give you a list of places in your area that accept donations. It is always a good idea to call them to ensure that they accept the type of clothing and accessories that you have. If you want the items to be picked up, add the keyword "pickup" to your search words to further narrow your list. Once the first two steps are completed, you will have gotten rid of the bulk of your closet clutter. You'll be left with a pile of items for sale. Your best bets for selling clothing, footware, and accessories are local consignment shops and eBay.

A consignment shop is a retailer that will sell your clothes and take a share of the profits. You get paid when the item sells. Many consignment shops only sell designer peices. Others sell non-designer clothing as long as it is in excellent condition. An internet search can help you to find consignment stores in your area.

Another option for selling your clothing is eBay. Before you list anything, consider what you have and search for similar items on eBay. Check the listings and note the price and how many bids there are on each item. This will give you an idea of the demand and what price you could expect to obtain. If the potential earnings make it worth your while, then by all means list your items. If not, donate them.
