How to Be Organized:
Deciding Where to Start
Clearing Clutter

How to Be Organized

The first decision when organizing clutter is determining where to start. This can feel like an overwhelming challenge if clutter is scattered over your entire home. There are several criteria, however, that can help you decide which starting point is right for you.

One way to determine priorities is by necessity. Is there a room or area of your home that is so jam packed with stuff that it is no longer functional? Perhaps your kitchen counter is covered and you have no place to prepare food or your bathroom is so cluttered that you can barely close the door. If so, these would be good starting points.

Another way of deciding where to begin organizing clutter is by accessibility. If you need to declutter two adjoining spaces, start with the one that is most easily reachable. For example, it would make sense to declutter your bedroom before tackling the master closet and to tackle the hallway before the bathroom.

Sometimes your feelings can direct you towards a preferred starting point. Are there areas of your home that cause you stress and anxiety? If so, start by decluttering these areas and you'll relieve these unpleasant feelings and become empowered to push forward.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter where you start organizing clutter as long as you start. Tackle one task and one area at a time. Once complete, your instincts will guide you towards what to do next. Clarity comes with action and you just have to take the first step.
