How to Organize Closets

You can create a storage space using closet organizing systems even if your bedroom doesn't have a closet. Simply choose a wall or corner, install a system, and you'll have an instant closet without the hassle of doing major renovations.

Your first challenge is to choose an appropriate area of the room for your storage system. Maintaining the balance of the room is important so you may need to rethink the placement of your bed and other furniture. Closets are usually positioned on the same wall as the door or on a wall that is perpendicular to the door. It should never be opposite the door as it should not be the centrepeice of the room. If you need to rearrange furniture, then by all means do so.

Once you've chosen a wall, determine which type of system would work for your space. It is important that the system that you install is the appropriate scale for the size of the room and the other furniture in it. If your room is large, then you can choose between self contained and wall supported closet organizing systems. The PAX/Komplements system has its own side walls and door and is appropriate for a larger space. The Shulte FreedomRail can also be used in a big room.

For smaller rooms, a wall supported system allows you to make the best use of your space. Shulte, Rubbermaid Configurations and Closetmaid would all work in smaller spaces.

How to Organize Closets

PAX/Komplements and Shulte FreedomRail have the advantage of being complete systems and fully customizeable. You can choose components that are appropriate for all of your individual belongings, as required, including ties, shoes, underwear, hats, shirts, pants, and so on. Rubbermaid Configurations and Closetmaid systems do not offer as many options and are generally sold in expandable predetermined configurations. These closet organizing systems, however, can be supplemented with stand alone drawers and shoe organizers sized to fit the scale of these products.

Another consideration that you need to make is aesthetics. Unlike PAX/Komplements which has side walls and a door, closet organizing systems like Rubbermaid, Closetmaid, and Shulte are completely open. To enhance the aesthetic appearance of your storage area, you can use decorative boxes and baskets. You could also use a self standing or wall supported screen to cover the edge of the system.

A wall supported screen is particularly recommended as it would enhance the appearance of the room without taking up valuable space. This can be created by installing two horizontal rods that are perpendicular to the wall. Attach the rods to the outer edge of the system, one at the top and the other at the bottom. You could then hang fabric from one end to the other to create a screen which partially covers your storage area.
