How to Organize Home Space:
Decluttering, Purging and Sorting

How to Organize Home Space

Decluttering is an essential step in home organization. To jumpstart your organizing efforts, start by making a first pass through your entire space. Maximize your impact by tossing large and obvious pieces of clutter. You’ll see results fast and will be motivated to do more.

Next, tackle each room, zone by zone. Get four containers and label them "keep", "sell", "donate", and "discard". Go through everything, item by item, and make decisions about what to keep and what to get rid of. Here are some questions to guide you:

Is it a keeper?
  • Do you use the item?
  • Does the item serve a useful purpose?
Can it be sold?
  • What is the condition of the item?
  • Is there a market for the item?
  • Would the amount of money that you could earn if you sold the item make it worth the time and energy that you would have to spend to make it happen?
Is it donatable?
  • What is the condition of the item?
  • Is there a charitable organization in your area that accepts the types of items that you have?
Should you discard it?
  • Is the overall condition of the item poor?
  • Is it broken, damaged, or worn out?
  • Have you ruled out selling or donating the item?

How to Organize Home Space

When you've finished going through everything, trash the items in the discard bin. Move the sell and donate bins to temporary storage to free up space in the immediate area.

Your next task is to narrow down your keepers to those that belong in the space. Over time, random things can accumulate in various places throughout your home. Books and magazines can pile up in the living room, mail can get dropped on the kitchen counter, dishes can end up just about anywhere, and so on. These items need to be moved back to the areas where they are stored so that you are left only with items that add value and will be stored in the space in which you are working.

Finally, sort your belongings into categories. Storing similar items together results in a more efficient use of space and makes it easier to find things when you need them. It also enhances your ability to maintain your results later as you’ll know where everything goes.
