How to Organize My Home:
Dealing With Obstacles to Organization

How to Organize My Home
When undertaking an organizing project, you will encounter obstacles - it's a fact of life! You can overcome these obstacles, however, and achieve your goals in spite of them. Here's how you can deal with the most common hindrances:

1) Feeling overwhelmed. Overwhelm tends to develop when trying to do too much, too soon. Take it one step at a time and complete one task before moving on to the next one.

2) Staying focused. Ensure that you can concentrate free from distractions when you are working on your home organization project. Choose times when other members of your family are away, turn off the tv, and turn down the ringer on your phone. This will enable you to fully concentrate on the task at hand and finish it within the scheduled time.

3) Dealing with your feelings. Perhaps one of the most difficult challenges when decluttering is dealing with your attachment to the things that you own. It is common to experience feelings of sentimentality, sadness, denial, and even anger. You can get leverage to make difficult decisions despite these feelings by considering everything that clutter is costing you. Think about the embarassment, the missed social opportunities, stress, anxiety, and the risk of injury. Next consider what you have to gain by getting organized. Consider the emotional, mental, physical, and financial benefits.

4) Not having a plan. There is truth in the old saying that “If you don’t know where you are going, you are likely to end up somewhere else”. Before you begin a home organizing project, make sure that you have a plan. A plan will keep you focused and on track towards achieving your ultimate goal. We recommend “The Complete Clutter Solution: Organize Your Home for Good”. This household guide provides a zone by zone, room by room outline for organizing your entire home.

5) Lack of time, ability, skill and/or knowledge. These obstacles are all lumped together as they share a common solution. If some or all of these constraints are preventing you from getting organized, the solution is to hire a Professional Organizer. An Organizer is easy to find in most places simply by Googling the keywords “Professional Organizer” + “Your City”. If you happen to be in a very rural area, try searching for an Organizer who offers coaching services by phone or online. You can also recruit a helper, if necessary, to assist you in implementing your plan of action.

6) Lack of availability of organizing products in your area. Organizing systems and solutions can be essential for helping you to control clutter and stay organized. If you live in a rural area, however, you may not be able to find the products that you need locally. The solution is to shop online. Stores like Sears (Canada) and The Container Store (USA and Canada), for example, will ship directly to your door, no matter where you live.

No matter what obstacles you encounter when organizing, you can overcome them. For more information and advice, consult “Train Yourself: Decluttering”. This book is full of excellent home organization and decluttering tips and advice and it's one of the best that we've found on the subject.
