How to Organize Your House: Assessing Your Storage Needs

How to Organize Your House

To effectively organize your home and create lasting results, you need to assess your storage requirements. This is done by identifying the purposes of each room, narrowing down what should be stored in each space and, determining how much needs to be accomodated now and in the future.

Focus on one room at a time and identify the primary and secondary purposes of that room. Consider the following:
  • Who uses the room? Rooms used by more than one family member must have storage solutions that accomodate multiple needs.
  • What is the room used for? Some common uses are eating, clothes storage, entertainment, reading, internet access, and food preparation.

Over time, many different random items can find their way into a room and create clutter. By determining what the room is used for, you'll be able to narrow down what should be stored in each area and relocate anything that doesn't belong to a more appropriate place. Consider this:

  • How many categories of belongings are presently stored in the room and what are they? For example, some or all of the following are typically found in a bedroom: clothes and accessories, DVDs, books, a laptop, makeup and toiletries, etc.
  • Of these categories, which are used primarily in this space? These are the items that should be stored here. Other belongings should be moved.
To further pinpoint your storage requirements, assess your present and future needs and the size of your space. Here's what you need to consider:
  • Of the categories that should be stored in the space that you are currently organizing, how many items does each category contain and how is this likely to increase or decrease in the future? For example, perhaps you enjoy books and tend to collect them. Your needs would be different than someone who gets rid of their books once they've read them as well as the needs of someone who's made the switch to eBooks.
  • Is the space large enough to accomodate your present and future anticipated storage needs? If not, is there another space in your home that could better accomodate these items or at least the overflow?
By assesing your needs and your space, you'll be able to precisely determine your requirements. This will enable you to choose optimal storage solutions to help you to get and stay organized.
