Lists for Home Organization:
Devising an Action Plan

Lists for Home Organization

Before beginning a home organization project, ensure that you have a plan. A plan will keep you on track to achieve the results that you need.

The most common and perhaps most effective way to structure an organization plan is by room and, within rooms, by zone. By breaking each job down into managable tasks, you’ll be more motivated to start and finish a job. This, in turn, will empower you to continue working towards your larger goal.

Start by making an outline with every room in your home on it. Then, divide each room into managable zones. Here’s what your outline might look like:

  • Bedroom
    • Closet
    • Dresser
    • Underbed space
  • Bathroom
    • Medicine cabinet
    • Vanity
    • Shower and bath
  • Basement
    • Workshop
    • Sports equipment
    • Bulk food storage
  • Garage
    • Car care
    • Garden equipment
    • Power tools

Note what needs to be done with each zone and what types of organizers you’ll need. Finally, estimate the amount of time each subtask will take and build a schedule, task by task, to complete your project.

Lists for Home Organization

Writing your own lists for home organization can be very time consuming and can become a project onto itself. Luckily, there are many excellent books on the market that you can follow to avoid having to build a plan yourself.

The Complete Clutter Solution is our pick for best home organizing guide. This book is cleverly organized by room, and each room is broken down into well-defined zones. Each zone features a clock icon showing roughly how long each one will take to de-clutter, and "Keeping Up" sections at the end of each chapter help you make sure that everything stays in its place. With this book as a guide, you'll get your entire home organized in no time.
