How to Organize Closet Space: Optimizing the Arrangement of Your Space Saving Products and System Components
How to Organize Closet Space
|
When it comes to the placement of your space saving products and/or organizing system components, there is no one solution that is perfect for everyone and every space. The arrangement that is best for you depends on your lifestyle, your wardrobe, and the frequency with which you use each piece.
The general rule of closet organizing is that belongings should be placed according to how high on your body they are worn and how frequently they are used. By extension, the products that hold these belongings should be arranged accordingly.
Divide your closet (in your head or on paper) into three horizontal zones. The top zone is for shelving. The middle and biggest zone is for rods, shelves and drawers. The bottom zone is for shelving and shoe organizers.

Most closets have a long horizontal shelf across the top. If the height of your closet is 8 feet or more, it is recommended that you install two shelves at the top. The very top shelf can be used to store boxes with out of season clothing and rarely used belongings. The next shelf down is ideal for hat boxes, scarf and glove bins, and occassional wear shoe and handbag boxes.
Next, move on to the middle section of your closet and divide it vertically into three zones (two if you have a very small closet). One zone will be needed for hanging longer items, like dresses, dress pants, and suits. The other zones can be subdivided to accomodate shirts and blouses on top and leave space for shelves and/or drawers beneath, depending on your needs. Your most often used clothing should generally be stored in the middle of your closet as it is the most accessible area.
The final horizontal zone at the bottom should be reserved for shoe organizers, handbag baskets, and/or drawers and shelves. If you have ony 5-6 inches of space left heightwise, place a single row of shoes on the floor.
Utimately, how you arrange your space saving products and/or system components is dependant on your unique needs. By using these universal organizing principles, however, you can optimize your use of space.
