How to Organize House: Assessing the Causes of Your Clutter
How to Organize House: Comedian George Carlin talks about the obsession with "stuff". If you have too much stuff, you could have a clutter problem.
Clutter generally forms due to one of three problems or some combination of them. It could be that too much stuff is being brought into your home, too much is accumulating, and/or items that you do not want or need are not being removed quickly enough.
In order to get organized and maintain the results, you must take stock of what you are bringing into your environment. Common clutter culprits include mail, gifts and spontaneous purchases.
Mail can create clutter as it generally gets dropped on a surface, such as a countertop or desk, and stays there. It can also fill drawers faster than you may realize.
Your purchases can also become clutter. If you're an avid reader, for example, you might find that you have so many books that your shelves are overflowing onto tables, chairs, the floor even. The same can be true of shoes, clothes, CDs and DVDs, magazines and newspapers, collectibles and ornaments, and virtually anything else.

Gifts can be another problem area. You may receive things that you don't want or need and feel guilty about getting rid of them. Since they serve no useful purpose, the storage space that they occupy is wasted.
The same is true for anything in your home that you do not need or use. These belongings simply occupy space in your home without providing a benefit. To become sucessfully organized, you must get rid of these items.
A related problem occurs when you have decided to sell, donate or discard items but you procrastinate. The items can stay in your home indefinitely until you get around to taking care of them. For as long as they do, they will continue to contribute to your clutter problem.
In order to organize house once and for all, identify which of these common clutter traps apply to your space. By being aware of what is causing your clutter, you are 50% of the way towards finding a solution. The other 50%, of course, is doing something about it.
