How to Organize Small Spaces
and Maximize Your Storage Area

How to Organize Small Spaces

Even if your space is small, you can still store more than you may have thought possible. The secrets to stretching your storage area are to define the uses of every room, declutter and remove anything that doesn’t belong, use the right storage solutions, and think "outside of the box".

Pick a room, any room and write down everything that you do in it. If you chose your bedroom, for example, your list might include reading, computing, and watching TV in addition to sleeping, romance, clothes storage, and getting dressed. With so many activities, you may find that clutter accumulates quickly and you soon run out of storage space. The solution is to limit the uses of your room so that you can store more of what matters most.

Next, get rid of everything that you no longer want. When decluttering small spaces, you need to go deep and be willing to make difficult decisions. Sell, donate or discard the things that you decide to give up. Sort and categorize everything that's left and remove the categories that don't belong from the space.

Now, choose appropriate storage solutions. Here are some tips:

    500 Ideas for Small Spaces
  • Slide organizing containers under furniture to optimize your use of floor space and, harness every inch of potential vertical storage by installing cabinets and shelving right to the ceiling.
  • Don't try to cram big room furniture into a small area. Buy products to scale.
  • Use dual purpose furniture. In a small space, everything has to do double duty so buy pieces that serve at least two purposes. Examples include a bed with side drawers, a storage ottoman that doubles as a coffee table, and side tables with shelving for books and/or electronics.
  • Use built-ins where possible. They take up far less space than stand alone alternatives.

One final tip for maximizing storage in small spaces is to think outside the box. Don't limit yourself to the four walls that define the room. Is there potential to add a sub floor? Can you place a cabinet just outside the door to expand your storage options? Can you add a hatch to harness storage space above the ceiling?

By taking advantage of these opportunities, you can maximize your storage area even if your space is limited. You'll be able to store everything that matters and will make optimal use of your space.
