Organize Your Closet Effectively By Limiting What You
Store There!

In order to successfully organize your closet, you have to make crucial decisions about what to store in it. Over time, your closet can become a jumbled mess of clothing, accessories, and other miscellaneous items.

The primary purpose of the bedroom closet is to store your everyday wardrobe and accessories. Unless you have a very large closet, miscellaneous items just add clutter to the space and decrease it's functionality. By limiting your closet to the storage of clothing and accessories, you can optimize your use of the space. Here are examples of items that do not belong in the bedroom closet: luggage, photos, gifts, personal papers, toolbox, briefcase, empty bags, accents, and dirty laundry.

Find alternative storage spaces for these items that make sense. Some options include: under the bed, the basement and the attic, a bookcase, desk, storage cabinet, and the garage.

You might discover that part of the reason that these items end up in the bedroom closet is that you don't have the right storage alternatives for your needs and your lifestyle. If that is the case, you should consider purchasing them. Otherwise, you may find, over time, that these items make their way back to the closet.

Aside from miscellaneous items, some articles of clothing also do not belong in the closet. Clothing that is rarely worn or has special sentimental value, such as your wedding dress, should be placed in more permanent storage in a trunk or box that is sealed against dust and moisture.

This task is presented at this stage because it needs to be completed in order to organize your closet and enhance the effectiveness of your overall results. If you can find alternative storage spaces for these other items quickly, do so. If you're finding it to be more of a challenge, however, simply place these items in temporary storage, continue with the next step, and revisit this task later. It's important not to lose focus and momentum towards the primary goal.

Once you have made broad decisions about which categories of clothing and accessories belong in your closet and, you've removed those that do not from your space, you are ready to proceed to the next step. You'll be making decisions about which individual items to keep and which to sell, discard or donate.
