Organizing Closet Space By Sorting and Prioritizing

Your next step for organizing closet space is to revisit the clothing that you decided to keep in previous steps. In this step, you'll sub-divide your loosely categorized piles of clothing (shirts, pants, etc.) to better assess what organizing products you need and to prepare for repacking.

The highest and best use of closet space is for the storage of often used items. As such, everything in your closet should be in season and in active rotation in your wardrobe.

You should already have numerous piles of clothing, footware, and accessories sorted loosely by category. Re-sort those piles by season, one for Fall/Winter and one for Spring/Summer. Once finished, you will have two piles for each category of clothing.

Your priority will now shift to whichever season is current. Move the other piles with off season clothing to a holding space. You'll go back to them later.

Focusing on the current season, separate casual clothing from dresswear and then sort again by colour. Put similar clothing together, longsleeves with longsleeves, and shortsleeves with shortlsleeves, for example. If you have a very large wardrobe, you can also sort by fabric and style.

You've now laid all the groundwork for the steps that follow. In the next step for organizing closet space, you'll determine which organizing systems and products you need to optimize your use of closet space based on the type and quantity of your belongings.
