Organizing Closet Space: Sorting and Categorizing Your Clothing
To achieve optimal results when organizing your closet, sort and categorize your belongings. This will allow you to stretch your storage space and to easily locate things when you need them. You should categorize your clothing, footware, and accessories by type, season, casual vs. dresswear, frequency of use, and colour.
Start at the top of your closet and work your way down, sorting by type. Place similar items together - hats with hats, shirts with shirts, shoes with other footware, and so on. To prevent becoming overwhelmed by huge piles of clothing, use existing shelves and garmant rods to hold your belongings as you sort them.
Everything stored in your closet should be in season and in active rotation in your wardrobe. Once you’ve finished sorting your wardrobe by type, separate your belongings by season and find alternative storage spaces for out of season clothes. Here are some options to consider:
- Use a trunk or bed frame side drawers to store sweaters.
- Closet space in another room can be used to store pants and dresses.
- The underbed space can be harnessed to store footware.
Next, shift your attention to the clothing that is in season. Separate casual clothing from dresswear. This will enable you to sectionalize items to help you locate specific belongings later. For even easier visual identification, sort by colour.
Finally, isolate your most often worn clothes and store these belongings in the most accessible spaces. Delegate rarely worn clothing to the back, up high and down low.
