Universal Principles for Organizing Your Home

There are many tried and true principles for organizing your home. These principles work no matter what your challenges and your lifestyle.

The first principle is that if you don't use an item and likely won't use it in the future, get rid of it. Decluttering is one of the most important steps in effective organizing. Holding onto items that no longer serve a useful purpose just impedes your organizing efforts.

One you've decided what you'll keep, categorize your belongings, sorting "like wth like". Rather than having books scattered all over your house, for example, group them all together and store them in one place. The advantage of this approach is that you'll know where to look when you need a particular item. You'll also know where to put it when you are finished using it.

When organizing your home, your goal is to ensure that everything you own has a storage space. This ensures that random items don't end up cluttering your space simply because you don't know where to put them.

You can find storage space all over your home. You can utilize space on the ceiling, walls, the floor, under furniture, and behind doors.

Containers, shelves, hooks and rods can help you to optimize your use of space. Think outside the box and don't let convention restrict you. Hang, fold, and stack it high to store more in less space.

Don't try to do everything in a single day. Organizing takes time. Break larger projects down into manageable tasks. Do one room and one area at a time.

Once you have finished organizing your home, make maintaining your results a part of your routine. Spend time every week decluttering and putting your belongings back in their assigned spaces.

If you follow these principles, you'll have no problem getting organized and staying that way. You'll sharpen your skills with time and organizing your home will get easier and easier.
