Successfully Organizing a Closet By Getting Rid of Belongings That You Don't Use!
Organizing a closet is easy once you've laid the groundwork. In previous steps, you emptied your closet and found alternative storage spaces for miscellaneous items. Now you're ready to sort through your clothing and accessories, pile by pile, to determine what to keep and what to sell, discard, or donate.
You'll need up to four boxes, depending on your intentions. Label them "sell", "discard", "donate", and "undecided". The last box is for items that you are have difficulty making decisions about. You can park the item in this box and decide later. This will allow you to stay focused and keep the process moving forward.
Start with any pile and pick items at random. Use these questions to guide you in decluttering and organizing a closet:
- Does the item still fit?
- Is it still in fashion?
- When was the last time you wore it? (If more than 12 months ago, it's probably time to let go of it.)
- Is it worn, ripped, faded or stained?
Once you've decided to part with an item, the question then becomes whether to sell, discard, or donate it. The answer is determined by the condition of the item. If it is damaged or out of style, throw it out. If it is in very good condition or better, donating it is an option. Items that are new or in excellent condition can be sold if there is a market for them.
Once you've completed this task, you will be left with categorized piles of clothing and accessories that you wear regularly. In the next step, you'll learn more about exactly where and how you can sell and donate your items.
