Organizing a Closet by
Decluttering to Optimize
Your Use of Space

Organizing a Closet

It's a well known fact that you wear as little as 20% of everything you own 80% of the time. The other 80% is made up of out of season clothing, occassional wear, and belongings that are worn out, damaged, ill fitting, and out of style. These belongings occupy storage space without adding value to your wardrobe. To free up this space and store more of what matters, you need to declutter your belongings.

Purchase some boxes and bins and label them keep, sell, donate, discard, and undecided. It's a good idea to have a number of keep bins labelled by category (e.g., shoes, sweaters, etc.) to save time later. The undecided bin is for items that you have difficulty making decisions about. This bin gives you a place to park them so that you can stay focused and keep the process moving forward.

Go through everything in your closet, piece by piece. Use these questions to guide your decisions about whether to keep the item:

  • Does the item still fit?
  • Is it still in fashion?
  • Is it flattering?
  • When was the last time you wore it? (If more than 12 months ago, it's probably time to let go of it.)
  • Is it in good condition?

Once you've decided to part with an item, the question then becomes whether to sell, discard, or donate it. The best option is determined by the condition and marketability of the item. If it's in poor condition, throw it out. If it's like new and there is a market, sell it. Everything else can be donated.

Once you've finished this task, you will be left with categorized piles of clothing and accessories that you wear regularly. More importantly, you'll have freed up a significant amount of closet space and will be on your way to using it in most optimal way.
