Keep Your Belongings Protected and Your Family Safe With These Tips for Organizing Your Basement

Tips for Organizing:

Unfinished basements generally serve the short and long term storage needs of a household. To make effective and efficient use of your basement as a storage area, consider your unique needs and create distinct zones that cater to them. Zones will vary according to lifestyle but generally you should include storage spaces for some or all of the following: workshop tools and materials, food and beverage supplies, hazardous items, and general storage.

For your workshop, choose a zone that is near a window, if possible, for light and ventilation. Choose a sturdy workbench with adequate surface space for your projects. Add a storage cabinet to keep your tools and supplies organized and accessible.

For the storage of hazardous materials, including flammable sprays, paints, and extra cleaners, choose a space that is accessible but not a heavy traffic area. Store these items in specially designed cabinets that can be locked to keep your family safe.

The best basement space for the storage of bulk groceries is a dark, dry corner. Use a durable, rust resistant shelving unit that is strong enough to hold heavy boxes and appliances and that keeps everything accessible and in plain view. Protect foods that might attract pests inside clear storage containers.

Containers and shelving units are also excellent products for general storage. Transparent boxes can hold and protect smaller objects while allowing you to easily locate them. Store larger items like extra paper towels and toilet paper directly on the shelves in the original packaging.
